This cottage has been a much loved family holiday home for twenty years. The client made a start on the master bedroom a couple of years ago and when finally finished, it highlighted how tired and dated the rest of the house was.

Next up were the sitting room and stairs and the brief was very simple – “get more light in!” The old staircase made the worst possible use of space, sticking out into the hallway at head banging height. The bespoke replacement is traditional, yet elegantly simple with an oak handrail atop powder coated metal balustrades.

A new granite fire surround was commissioned and back lit floating shelves lighten the adjacent alcove. Space is at a premium so as the existing sofas fitted well, they were reupholstered, whilst two new retro style chairs were given a modern twist using contrasting fabrics. The delicate birds and butterflies on the curtains bring all the colours together, framing the view of the creek outside.
